tr 'A-Z' 'a-z' maps every uppercase letter to lowercase. The two sets line up position by position.

Lowercase the gene names on chromosome 1.

tr lines the two sets up position by position: every A becomes a, every B becomes b, and so on.

Note

Unlike most tools, tr won't take a file name, it reads only from standard input. That's why every tr command starts with something feeding it, usually cat file | or an earlier stage of a pipeline.
